2012- A New Year & A New Committee!

Kangei Koi Club has now been up and running for over a year!

Our first AGM was held on 11th January and was very well supported. Our first year has been very enjoyable and, despite a couple of hiccoughs along the way, pretty successfull. Following the AGM, we have a full committee and some clear aims for the year ahead. If the interest, support and enthusiasm shown by members at our AGM is any indication of things to come, the future of the club is very bright indeed!

The new committee members are:

Chairman - Adam Byer

Secretary - Tim Morphy

Treasurer - Nathan Hodges

Vice Chairman - Steve Clarke

PRO - Bob Grinyer

If you're interested in koi, you can now follow our progress on Facebook. Also, if you think you may like to join us or visit one of our meetings as a guest, just email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Tommy 2 Ponds visits Kangei Koi Club

On behalf of all members, I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to Lee Boroughs of LB Aquatic Consultancy (AKA Tommy2Ponds) for delivering a very enjoyable and informative talk about koi welfare, parasites and treatments at our meeting last night.

Based on his extensive personal experience of identifying and treating koi ailments, well supported by some excellent photographs and interactive delivery style, the talk was very well received by all club members.

Thanks again Lee

Brenda & Geoff's Pond Visit

A big THANK YOU to Brenda and Geoff for opening their pond and garden to us yesterday and for providing such fantastic hospitality.

We met at 10.00am as planned and, despite the not-so-good forecast, the weather was dry and sunny and Brenda soon had bacon rolls on the go with a choice of tea or coffee to wash them down.

Geoff has some very nice fish in his pond, including a nice Kohaku and Sanke that he bought when he visited Japan about 20 years ago, and they’re still fit and healthy! However, my favourite koi was undoubtedly the big Doitsu Ochiba – a real eye catcher and the star of the pond in my opinion! There are a couple of photos of Geoff’s koi on the forum section if you want to look.

Unfortunately, the water in the pond was a bit cloudy and Geoff was more than happy to discuss ideas and suggestions of how he could modify his set up to get better results. Well, you know how koi keepers are always keen to express their opinions on someone else’s set-up, so the debate and discussion went on for the next few hours – probably would have gone on all afternoon if more than 4 of us had bothered to turn up and the rain had held off a bit longer!

Anyway, with Geoff’s head now full of ideas and suggestions and the rain starting to fall (but not until about 1 o’clock, we moved inside to – more bacon rolls, cakes, tea and coffee and discussion about all things to do with koi and ponds before the rain stopped and we returned to the garden for an inspection of Brenda and Geoff’s interesting and beautiful selection of plants – and some lessons about planting and maintaining Fuschias from Dave Penn.

Before we knew it, it was gone 2 o’clock and time to say farewell to our hosts and head for home. Those of us who did go had a really enjoyable morning with good company and first class hospitality – and look forward to finding out which suggestions Geoff goes with and whether or not it works!

Photo Show

Wednesday 11th August saw the club's first photo show.

It was planned as nothing more than a fun evening for members to put into practice some of the koi appreciation points learned during the recent talk by Bernie Wollands and all members would have the chance to vote for their favourite three koi in four classes; Kohaku, Sanke, Showa and Other, which included all non Go-Sanke koi. They also had the chance to vote for their favourite three koi overall.

Despite the majority of members appearing to be a little shy (or should I say "coy") about showing off their pride and joys, we did have 30 photos of different koi to consider. Check the forum post entitled "Photo Show" to see some of the entries.

If you're a koi keeper, or are thinking of keeping koi in the future, why not join us?

Full details of our meeting dates and venue can be found on our About page.

Thank You to Bernie Woollands

On behalf of all members of Kangei Koi Club, I'd just like to say a really big

THANK YOU to Bernie Woollands for giving up his time to talk us last night.

Not only was the talk interesting and informative, but his interactive style involved everyone and made learning entertaining as well as educational.

If the members of any other clubs really want to know what our judges are looking for when they talk about "body shape", "skin quality", "colour" and "pattern" and understand the importance and priority given to them and in what circumstances, contact Bernie to see if he's available - you won't be dissappointed!

Thanks again Bern.

A big THANK YOU to Val and John for hosting the

first ever Kangei Koi Club Pond Visit!

Members of Kangei Koi Club attended their first pond visit on Wednesday 18th May.

Val and John's pond was featured as Pond of the Month in the 10th anniversary issue of Koi magazine in March 2009.

Two years later and the filter house is still spotless, the water crystal clear, the koi have grown and the whole pond is surrounded by a mixture of Hostas and Acers that really compliment the beautiful, mature garden. Add some good company, great hospitality and a wild fox that visits the garden to be hand fed, and it all adds up to a very enjoyable evening in wonderful surroundings - idyllic!
